3D Laser Scanning of St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Hanoi – Digital Documentation for Heritage Preservation
The existing-condition survey of St. Joseph’s Cathedral in Hanoi was carried out using the Z+F Imager 5016 – a high-precision terrestrial laser scanner (TLS), to capture the complete architectural geometry for heritage conservation, restoration, and long-term digital archiving. The deliverable includes a 3D point cloud dataset that can be integrated into BIM workflows, online visualization platforms, or long-term digital preservation systems.

Overall point cloud model of St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Hanoi
Project Objectives
- Capture the complete architectural condition of both interior and exterior spaces of the cathedral.
- Generate a high-density 3D point cloud with millimeter-level detail.
- Deliver standardized datasets for conservation, research, and restoration.
- Provide long-term archival data in international formats, compatible with BIM systems and web-based 3D visualization.

Equipment & Methodology
Equipment – Z+F Imager 5016
The Z+F Imager 5016 is a high-end terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) with a range of up to 360 m and an accuracy of ±1 mm, equipped with HDR true-color imaging. It is particularly suitable for documenting heritage structures with complex details and large vertical extents such as St. Joseph’s Cathedral.

Scanning & Processing Workflow
- Established multiple scan stations across exterior, nave, aisles, staircases, domes, and bell towers.
- Applied cloud-to-cloud registration combined with sphere targets to enhance accuracy.
- Processed and standardized point cloud data, including noise filtering, color balancing, and export to international formats.
Deliverables
- High-quality point cloud in LAS, E57, RCP formats with ±2 mm accuracy.
- True-color dataset captured using HDR imaging from the Z+F 5016 scanner.
- Structured dataset organized by zones: exterior, nave, roof vaults, bell towers, etc.
- Original project files (ZFS format), including file structure documentation and usage guidelines.
- Data ready for BIM modeling, architectural drawings, or web-based visualization via Cesium/Potree.
